{"id":2072411,"date":"2023-05-31T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-31T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csengineermag.com\/?p=2072411"},"modified":"2023-05-30T22:44:35","modified_gmt":"2023-05-31T03:44:35","slug":"june-pride-month-pioneering-black-architect-in-bwaf-audio-doc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csengineermag.com\/june-pride-month-pioneering-black-architect-in-bwaf-audio-doc\/","title":{"rendered":"June Pride Month: Pioneering Black Architect in BWAF Audio Doc"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For consideration in Pride Month news, the pioneering African American woman architect Amaza Lee Meredith (born 1895) will be celebrated in the latest episodes of the&nbsp;<em>New&nbsp;Angle: Voice<\/em>&nbsp;audio documentary series created by Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amaza Lee Meredith\u2019s life, which included designing a summer destination for middle-class African Americans in Sag Harbor on the East End of Long Island in 1947, will soon be in the popular imagination: Actor Laurence Fishburne is producing a new HBOMax series based on Colson Whitehead\u2019s novel&nbsp;<em>Sag&nbsp;Harbor<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amaza Lee Meredith\u2019s audio documentary will be found here&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bwafnewanglevoice.libsyn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/bwafnewanglevoice.libsyn.com<\/a>&nbsp;(and everywhere people get their podcasts) later this month.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mail.google.com\/mail\/u\/1?ui=2&amp;ik=7c46dd4e8a&amp;attid=0.2&amp;permmsgid=msg-f:1766697228651342835&amp;th=188491c4e36e2bf3&amp;view=fimg&amp;fur=ip&amp;sz=s0-l75-ft&amp;attbid=ANGjdJ90uo1joefeeVgAbTmTmEY-CnVrHK0-97JTEqE-OwmYmw8_n-eQmwCdXn1qvrJbSQvut5Hewxy65Io2jS05ISCuL24fNCxqyRgI2a0UYC1222f97VhacMH-cSM&amp;disp=emb&amp;realattid=188491c061d619eadb82\" alt=\"AmazaLM_NYStateHisoricOffic.jpeg\" width=\"975\" height=\"696\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation (BWAF) executive director Cynthia Phifer Kracauer is available to talk about the series and the episode on Meredith. She conceived and produced the audio documentaries with noted writer and editor Alexandra Lange Ph.D. and the acclaimed producer Brandi Howell. The production team traveled to Charlottesville, Richmond, and Manassas, Va., to interview Baptist preachers and historians who document how Meredith founded a department at a university, taught art at Virginia State, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While studying at Virginia Normal and&nbsp;Industrial Institute in Petersburg, Va., Meredith &#8220;began a sporadic but long-term love affair\u201d with her teacher, Edna Meade Colson&nbsp;(1888-1985), according to historian Jacqueline Taylor in her book&nbsp;<em>Suffragette City<\/em>. In 1947, Meredith enrolled at Teachers College in New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mail.google.com\/mail\/u\/1?ui=2&amp;ik=7c46dd4e8a&amp;attid=0.3&amp;permmsgid=msg-f:1766697228651342835&amp;th=188491c4e36e2bf3&amp;view=fimg&amp;fur=ip&amp;sz=s0-l75-ft&amp;attbid=ANGjdJ8ridZS1ssYGn0ACQXgor0DDUSW8qGJsqiQPd0iThDYVnoendIwgVU159POtcvNC09TIgvD8U3bY9HeKKTS9lQim6RhSlI6z1OhYW8zDK6bhs-J39zUrPGZjMU&amp;disp=emb&amp;realattid=188491c061d718e55033\" alt=\"Amaza_Lee_Meredith_o17.jpg\" width=\"-318\" height=\"-401\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This time in New York influenced her work. The building image attached shows Azurest South (1939) in Petersburg, Va., one of Meredith\u2019s best documented works. The architect shared the International Style house with her&nbsp;partner Colson, a leading Black educator and activist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Azurest South was listed on the National Register of Historic&nbsp;Places in 1993, and National Historic Landmark status is pending. On Sag Harbor, Azurest North \u2014 which Meredith developed with her sister Maude Terry \u2014 has been listed since 2019 as part of&nbsp;the Sag Harbor Hills, Azurest, and Ninevah Beach&nbsp;Subdivisions (SANS) Historic District. The Sag Harbor work includes two&nbsp;residences by Meredith, including her family\u2019s cottage where Meredith\u2019s drafting table could be found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The podcast will debut soon.
